De-shedding your dog in Austin: what actually works

Austin dog owners with double-coat breeds know the struggle. Huskies, German Shepherds, Labs, and similar breeds shed constantly — and Austin's climate makes coat-blow season even more intense.

Why de-shedding matters in Austin

Austin's hot summers mean dogs regulated temperature primarily through panting, not coat. But their undercoat still cycles — it doesn't stop because it's hot. Spring (March–May) and fall (October–November) are peak coat-blow seasons when shedding accelerates.

What actually works: the de-shedding process

An effective de-shedding treatment has three phases:

**1. De-shedding shampoo:** Applied and left to penetrate the coat. Loosens dead undercoat from the follicle.

**2. High-velocity blow-out:** A professional-grade dryer removes loose fur that the shampoo loosened. This is where most of the fur actually comes out — not brushing.

**3. Specialized combing:** A deshedding comb (like a Furminator-style tool) removes remaining loose undercoat.

Done correctly, this reduces shedding by 60–80% for 4–8 weeks.

What doesn't work

  • Shaving: Doesn't stop shedding, damages coat structure, can cause "post-clipping alopecia" in double-coat breeds
  • Brushing alone: Without blow-out, you're only removing surface fur
  • Cheap deshedding sprays: Most have no clinical backing

How often to de-shed

  • Heavy shedders (Huskies, Shepherds): Every 6–8 weeks year-round, every 4 weeks during coat blow
  • Moderate shedders (Labs, Goldens): Every 8–12 weeks
  • Light shedders (Doodles): As needed based on coat condition

Austin-specific note

Austin's humidity can cause undercoat to clump and mat rather than shed normally. If your dog's coat feels dense or clumped in patches, that's a sign professional de-shedding is overdue — not just optional.
