Your puppy's first groom: what to expect

The first groom is one of the most important experiences in your puppy's life. Get it right and grooming is something they tolerate or even enjoy. Get it wrong and it creates lifelong anxiety around the grooming process.

When to start

We recommend starting between 8 and 16 weeks old, after your puppy has had their first set of vaccines. The earlier, the better for socialization.

Some groomers require full vaccination. We use a Fear Free approach and work with puppies at 8+ weeks with first-round vaccines.

What to expect from a puppy first groom

A puppy first groom is slower and gentler than a regular service. The goal isn't a perfect grooming result — it's a positive experience.

What we do:

  • Gentle bath with puppy-safe shampoo
  • Low-stress blow dry at reduced heat and velocity
  • Basic brush-out
  • Nail clip (no grinder on first visits for very young pups)
  • Ear wipe
  • Treats throughout

What we DON'T do on first visits:

  • Stress-inducing restraint
  • Forcing body positions the puppy resists
  • Rushing to finish

Tips for before the appointment

  1. Let your puppy get used to being handled. Touch paws, ears, and muzzle daily in the weeks before.
  2. Make it positive — treats for being still, calm praise.
  3. Don't feed a large meal right before the appointment.

After the first groom

The goal is to come back. The second groom is easier than the first. The third is easier still. Consistency is what builds a dog that tolerates — or even looks forward to — grooming.

Book every 6–8 weeks after the first groom, even if the puppy doesn't need a full haircut. The routine matters more than the haircut at this stage.
